  • Multiple years of herbicide applications for hydrilla control have had an impact on this non-native species. The amount of hydrilla present in 1999 was substantially less than recent years. However, the amount of the filamentous blue-green alga, Lyngbya, has increased at the same time and is little affected by most algaecides. At times, it has become so abundant as to impair fishing activity and has to be removed using the Division's weed harvester. The headwater area of the pond consists of a wooded swamp with a channel navigable by canoe or small boat; this area has historically held large chain pickerel. Horseys is our deepest pond with maximum depth reaching 12 feet in front of the dam. This area holds bass and crappie during the late fall and could be very productive on an unseasonably warm winter day.
