This attractive little pond is located next to the Abbotts Mill Nature Center. Largemouth bass are relatively abundant, but the majority of the adult population consists of 12 to 15 inch fish. Most are located in the lower half of the pond adjacent to the steep sloped banks, especially along the road's edge. Occasional citation largemouth bass are taken by anglers. Moderate numbers of bluegill occur, with many larger than 8 inches and occasional ones close to one pound. The sandy bottom along the western shore is a popular nesting area for the larger bluegill. Few black crappie are observed but. most are good-sized and several citations are taken each year. Yellow perch are also uncommon, but the pond averages two citation-sized fish (one pound or more) annually. Chain pickerel are present in this weedy pond and tend to frequent the beds of aquatic plants in the back of the pond.
Much of the lower end of the pond has been colonized by hydrilla. This non-native species is an aggressive grower and quickly out competes most species of native plants. It grows to the water's surface by August and can greatly impede fishing. Water clarity is good, however, so fish the outside edge of the hydrilla beds or along the channel. There is a mix of bladderwort, fanwort (another non-native) and coontail that grow in scattered areas throughout the pond. Much of the shallow areas (less than 3 feet) support extensive stands of spatterdock. Fishing along the edges of these beds, especially in the lower half of the pond, is often productive.
The ranking score is used to determine how "popular" a trip or location is. It is calculated based off of a weighted average of the number of reviews and the user ratings. For example, a location with 2 reviews and an average rating of 5 will have a lower "ranking score" than one with 10 reviews and an average rating of 4. This is because even though the first location has a better average rating, it has not been reviewed as much as the second location, so it is not as "popular". In the future we may modify the ranking score to take in additional factors, such as the number of views, comments, and photos.
